A First Glance at the New Bora Laskin Law Library

June 26, 2015

It has been a long time coming, but the new Bora Laskin Law Library and the new Jackman Law Building are beginning to take recognizable shape as a school, workplace and library.

Interim Chief Librarian Gian Medves recently went on a tour of the renovated library space and came back with some photos of the new space. While we can see it is still very much a construction zone, the library staff are beginning to envision how our old/new home will look. It is pretty exciting!

Those of us who remember the lovely views of Philosopher’s Walk from the main floor reading room are happy to see the new reading room will still have those great views.

So with a bit of imagination, take a look a the new space.

This will be the view on entering the library. Very much like in the old library, the circulation, reference and IT services will be be on the left as you walk in. On the right will be student space and study rooms

Here is the main floor reading room viewed from the upper floor . The room will serve double duty as a reading room and (a pretty spectacular) event space when needed. The views are wonderful in all seasons . I am sure it will be a popular place for students to study and relax

The group study rooms on the upper floor are a far cry from the dull interior rooms in the old space. These rooms look out north to the Faculty of Music

Stay tuned. We will have more photo’s to share as the building gets closer to completion.

Have You Heard about the Google Scholar Button?

June 5, 2015

The Google Scholar Button is a new Chrome or Firefox add-on which can streamline your journal research. Once the button is installed you can easily search Google Scholar by highlighting the terms you want to search and then clicking on the button. A menu will appear on the page with links to electronic versions of the resource in which you are interested. If you have Google Scholar set up to recognize your home institution it will seamlessly link to any resources that are freely available on the internet or any to which your institution subscribes

June 1, 2015

Our New Interim Chief Librarian, Gian Medves

Gian Medves has been named Interim Chief Librarian of the Bora Laskin Law Library

As the Library and Faculty’s Director of Information Technology, Gian already plays a critical role in the Law School and the University and, as of June 1st, he will now be taking on the additional role of Chief Librarian.  It will be interesting days ahead for the library; Gian will be coordinating the upcoming move back to our renovated building as well as charting our future direction.  We are happy to be in Gian’s very capable hands.
